We train teachers to work in preschools, schools, homes and communities. Our program is child-centered (from birth to 2nd grade) and is dedicated to culturally relevant practices. We are focused on training early teachers to facilitate the development and learning of all young students through an educated curriculum that combines early childhood education, early childhood special education and bilingual education content. Our certification students become outstanding teachers, decision makers, and leaders in early childhood. Our non-certified students ask questions that are critical to the education and development of young children in a variety of settings. Our alumni have held positions such as early interventionists, preschool teachers, elementary school teachers, kindergarten principals, professional developers, government officials, authors (books for both children and adults) and more.
We offer Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Special Education for Early Childhood (without prior certification), as well as Ed.D. Degrees in Preschool Education and Preschool Policy.

Please consider applying to the Master of Arts in Curriculum and Teaching Oriented Early Childhood.1 Ph.D. Student Information Booklet for Early Childhood Education Fall 2008 Updated May 2010 University of Education Department of Teaching and Teacher Education South Carolina Columbia, South Carolina (803) Program Objectives Ph.D. The Columbia University of South Carolina Early Education Program was established as an independent program recognizing the emergence of early childhood education as a unique and critical field of study in the fall of 1993. The program gives graduates experience in developing the following characteristics recommended in the Early Teacher Education Handbook adopted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (1991). Each goal is more specifically defined in the course objectives that are integrated into the course plans. In addition, Dr. Early Childhood Education aims to prepare students in advanced programs to master the standards and core tools of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (2003), which are listed as follows: Standards Standard 1: Promoting Child Development and Learning Standard 2: Family Making and Public Relations Standard 3: Observation , Documentation and Assessment to Support Young Children and Families Standard 4: Teaching and Learning Standard 5: Growing as a Professional

Students are also expected to be academically involved in the young child community at both the regional and national levels. The PhD is a degree of research; Therefore, students are expected to contribute to a knowledge base in early childhood. Admission Requirements Application Deadlines Applications are considered by the Extended Applications Admissions Committee as they are accepted from the Student Services Office. Admission Criteria Admission requirements must be provided by the doctoral student. Students have the ability and disposition to complete a rigorous course of doctoral teaching and research. Admission decisions are based on the student’s overall academic profile, including evidence of scientific potential, as indicated: Master’s degree or equivalent from an accredited Early Childhood Education Master’s program or related field. Average score 3.25 or higher major. Three reference letters focused on the individual’s scientific potential. Master’s record test score (estimated at least 1000 combined verbal and quantitative) or Miller analogy test (expected minimum 410). At least four years of teaching experience in pre-school education or approved relevant experience. Letter of Intent and other written tests available (e.g. publish a card or research paper, published article, previous research paper, academic papers). Personal interview with the Admissions Committee for advanced programs.
3 Once the applicant has met all of the above requirements, the Early Childhood Admissions Committee will make a decision on the application. Students are responsible for ensuring their files are complete. Admission Procedures Graduate School Application Available in Early Childhood All completed applications will be submitted to the Advanced Programs Admissions Committee. Based on the review of applications, the Admissions Committee invites potential candidates for a personal interview. Applicants recommended for full enrollment will be notified of admission by the Graduate School. The ECE Doctor Coordinator will write a letter to the applicant announcing the appointment of an advisor. Upon full completion of the graduate school, students should consult with their advisor about the relevant courses and reading in preparation for the qualifying examination. Application Procedures Admission will be based on passing a written and oral qualification examination. Eligibility for Written and Oral Qualifying Exams In order to be able to take the written and oral qualifying exams, a student must be admitted to an early childhood education doctoral program and must have completed twelve credits at the 700 or 800 level education college. The student must pass a written entrance examination after completing 12 doctoral credits in the semester. Qualification Examination Committee The Written and Oral Qualification Examination Commission consists of a student supervisor, two members of the Early Childhood Higher Education Committee, and possibly other faculties. Written Qualification Exam The Written Qualification Exam is a closed book exam and is conducted and administered by a student supervisor. This four-hour essay exam is conducted individually and is designed to assess a student’s writing and thinking skills and to relate his or her academic beliefs to the theoretical literature. Students can use computers to process exams; However, the use of a computer must be agreed in advance. Upon completion of the examination, the administration assistant will print the original of the examination and hand over a copy to the student, which will be handed over to the examination committee. If the exam is handwritten, the student must have it typed and duplicated to pass to the committee. The original exam should be left to the administrative assistant. The first part of the test includes questions related to the applicant’s informed beliefs about young children and learning; Advocacy activities on behalf of children and families; And the work of theorists, researchers, or other professionals who have developed and shaped the applicant’s professional views. It is expected that the exam will be written scientifically and references will be provided even if complete citations and exact publication dates are not expected. The second part of the test will be a critique of a research article. Criticism is a must
4 Summarize, integrate, and synthesize material covered in courses or issues and critique (e.g., analysis and reflection indicating strengths, weaknesses, and usefulness of research). Criticism should be written in an academic style (i.e. avoid compression and everyday expressions). Although the student should refer to other papers, exact publication dates are not required. Oral Qualification Exam The oral exam will focus on the student’s written qualifying exam. Students are also required to reflect on their strengths and challenges (academic and professional) in successfully completing the program. Qualification Exam Evaluation The Examination Committee establishes the written or oral evaluation of the qualification examination, which is accepted or unsuccessful.
