Our son switched from Cub Scout to Boy Scout just before the pandemic began. For months at his home, he earned 11 merit badges by attending virtual classes. Immediately after his first Honorary Court in the fall of 2020, we purchased a merit sash badge for him to display.
Sashes come in a variety of lengths. Knowing that he is growing (perhaps the same as or better than his dad?), We decided to make the biggest sash so he could grow together. Just catch it? Now we need to make it shorter. So I can shorten it and get ready to “grow” with it over the next few years.

Sew along the seam line with thicker stitches than in step 4 (the goal is to make it easier to remove as your child grows up). If you do not have a sewing machine, you can sew by hand.
Step 5 Return to a flat surface. Lay the sash flat, just as you would when marking the hem. Then fold the top of the fabric forward along the hem.
Step 7 Fold the pointed end toward the main cloth and secure it with a pin. Then hand sew along the open edges. Remember that these stitches will be removed as your child grows up and later decides to lengthen the sash.
