English Lessons For Esl Students
Let’s go through the 7 steps you’ll want to take when designing an ESL curriculum that focuses on speaking and conversation. The good news is that there are many great resources to help us learn English, including this. This is an easy way to teach conversational English curricula.

Of course, there are other ways to schedule a TEFL talk hour. Consider using the Test Teach Test (TTT) or task-based learning to keep things fresh and interesting.
You need to set the context at the beginning of the lesson. You want to do this because teaching a language (grammar or vocabulary) without giving students a situation or reason to use it is less useful.
Context can be set in a variety of ways, but it’s a great way for students to talk to their partners for a few minutes about a particular topic. It’s best to give them a challenge, such as “Think of 5 reasons why …” or “Tell your partner about the last time …”
Do not control the language they use, but use it as a warm-up to activate your prior knowledge. Then, at the end of this time, learn some answers from the students.

The step of advanced teaching is to focus the conversation on what you are teaching that day. For example, choose the grammar and vocabulary that the students used and that you will teach.
Remember to set the context in all curricula. This is the best way to make ESL less memorable. And of course, at this stage, like everyone else, you will want to consider the needs of your students.
Enter the language (grammar or vocabulary) more precisely at this point. But don’t be overwhelmed by the tiny details, but focus on the bigger picture. When can you use this language and what does it really mean when you say “XYZ”.
For example, if I present “too short / long, etc.” I could show some pictures of people wearing bad clothes and ask what the problem is. They are too short! It’s too small! (More ideas here: Clothing ESL activities). Or draw an English map for countries and nationalities so students can see what you are talking about.
Let Me Introduce Myself (for Adults)
Or, if your lesson is a simple past, students could tell them about some of the things they did during the summer holidays. Apparently they will have to use verbs and could highlight some of the past forms they used. Expect errors with a negative shape, etc., but don’t look too closely yet.
It is best to encourage students to participate, not individually or as a whole class. Remember, these are student-centered classes!
A common mistake is to delve into the small details first without looking at the big picture. Don’t miss this step. In addition to context, they help students understand the meaning of language and also know when to use it.
Remember: if you want your students to improve their skills, you need to focus on your students again. More in the short video below:

Discuss the details at this point. When familiarizing yourself with grammar, remember to list not only the positive but also the negative and the form of the question. Remember to give an example of a sentence for vocabulary so that students can see how it is actually used.
Although textbooks often have a small chart, I like to write it on the board. I usually make a chart with almost all the blank elements. I then get the help of a student to complete it.
Using languages, students have often seen the same thing, but they need a reminder of how to do it. Here, put the needs of your students at the forefront and provide them with additional practice regarding things they may face.
I hate pronunciation exercises, so I don’t usually do this part of the curriculum. For some students, however, they can be very helpful and I will pull them out if there is a problem with one or two words. Students sometimes think they are having fun, depending on the country you are studying in.

And the good news is that there are plenty of resources available if you’re not an expert in the field. Watch YouTube and watch some great videos. Of course, you will also want to provide many internship opportunities here.
If you are teaching children, be sure to include them, as they may be hearing this grammatical construction or vocabulary for the first time. You want to start your students by helping them say things at the beginning, instead of learning bad pronunciations later.
At this point, you want your students to have time to use the language. Give them a very controlled practice using the target language. Things like filling in the blanks, matching worksheets, and so on. Textbooks usually have very good sections that devote a grammatical aspect to the chapter.
Make sure you have some questions about the form and some about the meaning. The best combine both. Always ask students to compare answers with a partner before checking with the class. They can often make mistakes at this level instead of relying only on the teacher.

Make sure your internship encourages students to use the target language for this lesson. This is obvious, but worth mentioning!
I try to look at it as less than something more. Don’t hit students with a page of text and don’t expect them to go through that. Go to the most important points and then go to the next step faster. However, don’t skip this step, as there is definitely an intermediate path here.
Once students have mastered the basics, you can set up an activity in which they will be able to use the target language more creatively. Some of my favorite ESL speaking exercises are things like surveys, board games, discussion topics, or assignment-based learning.
This type of exercise can only take a few minutes or an entire lesson (next if you have time on schedule.

Follow up and offer feedback, but don’t interfere for too long until students understand their importance. A meaning error is much more serious at this point than a form error, so focus on that.
At this point, I usually circle in class and listen to the students. I carry paper and pen and write down sound errors. At the end of the activity, I will highlight the ones I hear multiple times with the whole class.
If I meet students in one semester and they are not particularly motivated to learn English, I usually rate it as a class on how the activity went. For example: good, good or needs improvement. If that’s not good, I’ll say something like, “I’ve seen a lot of students speak Korean. Next time, try to use more English. Or,“ Remember, the goal is to improve English. Please speak 1: 1 with other students, not in a large group because it doesn’t really help you.
And as teachers, we need to be aware that the best designed games and activities will complement the learning experience, not disturb it. There are many resources available for this level, so be creative and have fun with your students!
Ways To Support English Learners In The Mainstream Classroom
This next step really depends on where you teach and how much time you have in class. If I have a few extra minutes to kill at the end of the lesson, I will usually have a small action or ESL review game that I can use. This is a great way to complete a lesson and help students consolidate what they have learned in terms of grammar or vocabulary.
Or I can do my homework. Maybe a little writing, creating a video, extra practice with forms, etc. It really depends on which class you teach, but in my university course, there was usually a bit of homework after each lesson.
Whenever I talk to people who are preparing a curriculum or presentation to prepare for an ESL teacher job interview, I am always surprised that
