Below we cover the most common questions about the National Eligibility Scholarship Program. Please refer to our National Competency Semi-Final Slices page for the latest information on the actual and estimated State Selection Index sections.
NMSP is a program that the National Scholarship Competency Company, in collaboration with the College Board, has successfully run to identify high school seniors. Some levels of diagnosis are based solely on young PSAT / NMSQT scores, while others require additional requirements (described below). NMSC offers approximately $ 50 million in scholarships each year, and some colleges offer less or even free tuition for accredited students, increasing the net impact of national quality.
National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
You must take a PSAT / NMSQT as a high school student, or attend a high school in the United States or US Territories, or be an American student studying abroad. In the report of your PSAT score, you will see a section on how to answer your selection index and eligibility questions. If there is an asterisk next to your preferred profile, it means NMSC believes you are not eligible.

Every year students lose PSAT due to legal reasons like illness. To give these students the opportunity to compete for national competence, NMSC has a process called Alternative Admission. Due to the epidemic, NMSC has adopted a waiver policy to replace the 2022 class. Students can apply directly to NMSC and can be assessed based on their SAT score.
The weight selection index is your PSAT component score to determine your level of knowledge in the early stages of the National Competency Program.
The selection index is double your reading, writing, language and math scores. For example, a student with 34, 35 and 36 grades has a selection index (34 + 35 + 36) x2 = 210. . Calculating the selection index is still easy. First, ignore the final zero in your score. Then double your ERW score. Then add your math score. For example, a student with an ERW score of 690 and a math score of 720 will have a selection index of (69) x2 + 72 = 210. Due to the stable relationship between the test score and the section score, these two methods will always work. You cannot extract the selection index directly from the total score (320-1520). For students entering SAT scores with optional entries, note that – when calculating the selection index – each SAT section is limited to 760. For example, if you have 700 ERW and 800 math, your choice index would be (70) x2 + 76 = 216.
NMSP has a long history of emphasizing “verbal” skills. In the absence of a writing section on the PSAT or SAT, the oral section was doubled and added to the math score for the 60-240 selection range. The college considers reading, writing and language circles as independent examinations. In short, “doubling” is nothing new.
National Merit Semifinalist Cutoffs Class Of 2022
You can use compass projection to determine if you are eligible for honors or semifinal, but there is no way to know your official status (sometimes at the end of August) until the NMSC notifies the high school in early September last year. Compass has released Class 2021 clips. The commendable cut for future classes is unofficially identified in April after the PSAT. Compass reports this score and how it can affect the semi-final parts of our regular posts that are updated regularly. NMSC does not publish state cuts publicly, so Compass makes this information available to students. For the 2022 class, the semi-final cut can only be predicted until September 2021.
Although approximately 1% of participants will advance to the semifinals, there are a number of reasons why percentile scores are so wrong in determining eligibility, especially since the cut varies greatly by state. Compass predictions are good predictions, but still they are just predictions.
Although only one national award is given to commendable scholars, the NMSC distributes semifinals to states (and the Districts of Columbia and the United States) based on the number of students graduating from the state. California, for example, sees about 2,100 semifinals each year, the highest number in the country. 13% reach the semifinals as it makes up approximately 13% of high school graduates. Mississippi, on the other hand, typically sees about 135 people in the national semifinals, as the state accounts for only 0.8 percent of U.S. graduates. The distribution is not entirely related to the number of students taking PSAT in the state.
The two factors that affect the cuts are the participation rate and the population. In some states, ACT is the dominant test and many students do not take PSAT. This keeps some students out of the competition and creates fewer cuts. Some states have highly qualified students and they are particularly competitive. Massachusetts and New Jersey, for example, have 2021 222 class notches. At the other end of the spectrum, there are NMSF 209 cuts for the 2021 class in North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming. At least the semifinals for the state are national. For example, if the commanded cut is 210, no state can have less than 210 semi-final cuts.
It’s Not Too Late For National Merit! Here’s An Alternate Entry Route Into The Competition.
There is no difference between home students and other students in one state. U.S. students studying abroad must have the highest state restrictions in that country. For the 2021 class, that number was 222. Boarding schools are the most complex to calculate incisions. Instead of being regulated at the state level, they are fixed at the regional level. For example, a student of Northeast Boarding School must get the highest marks in any state in the Northeast. NMSC defines boarding schools as schools with primarily out-of-state students. The NMSC considers your state where you went to school during the PSAT, not your new school’s living conditions or status.
NMSC has made this part of the process easier to understand than before. High school students are eligible in the United States or parts of the United States. Period Students studying abroad are as long as they are U.S. citizens or legal residents of the United States (“green card”) or have applied for permanent residency which is eligible until rejected) and intend to become U.S. citizens. To come together. The first opportunity allowed by law
The NMSC will send the information to the schools by the end of August. Some schools notify students of their status in early September. Many schools are waiting for the NMSC to officially release the names of the students in the second week of September. Compass keeps track of all the latest news on our Semi-Final Cutout page.
While semifinal status is a great bonus to include in your application, don’t expect it to have a significant impact on your chances of being accepted into most colleges alone. The diagnosis tells the college that you have done well on the PSAT. Your SAT and ACT scores are very important for college. Your national competency status does not add new information. However, the large number of participants in the semifinals is considered an honor in some colleges and influences the decision to admit them. Some colleges have special programs to attract national competitors and give away major prizes.
What Are The Chances That This Will Qualify For The National Merit Scholarship Semifinals In New Jersey Class Of 2022?
What happens after I name the semifinals? Semi-finalists will receive a certificate to enter the final event portal. You must provide background information and an article. Your school must submit its recommendation, and the application must be submitted electronically in the second week of October.
The NMSC may change the request in the coming years, but it has been for many years. It is so extensive that most students can use their common app articles or do a little work. For the 2022 class, the request was:

One of the conditions to advance from the semi-finals to the finals is to get a “confirmation score”. This score will help you confirm that you can get a high score on an official SAT or ACT test date and test your testing skills.
The approval score is determined annually by the NMSC and is calculated in the same way as the PSAT selection index. Approval points are determined nationally, so it doesn’t matter which semifinal you meet. The SAT Confirmation Selection Index (SSI) is usually close to or near the commanded cut.
The easiest way to calculate SSI is to score your section. Add zero, double
