Around this time each year, thousands of would-be college students find out (many times) that they’ve been accepted to schools they’ve applied to. Ultra-low acceptance rates at many “elite” colleges this year are higher than in previous years, as a college admissions scandal involves many wealthy parents accused of using bribes to get their kids into the ideal schools.

But with all the attention given to these name-brand institutions, the overall picture of college admissions is very different: The vast majority of schools where most Americans go to higher education, the majority of applicants, according to its new Pew Research Center for American Education Analysis by the Ministry of Data Research Center.
Of the 364 four-year colleges and universities we studied, 17 admitted fewer than 10 percent of applicants in 2017, the most recent year for which comprehensive data is available. This group includes prestigious universities such as Stanford (4.7%), Harvard (5.2%), Yale (6.9%) and Northwestern University (9.2%). Another 29 schools accepted between 10% and 20% of applicants, including Georgetown (15.7%), USC (16%), UCLA (16.1%) and UC Berkeley (17.1%). All of these schools, along with three other schools with high acceptance rates, have been embroiled in admissions scandals — all because coaches and other track and field personnel have been accused of taking bribes to name ineligible students “recruited athletes” ”, or because current students are accused of paying for other forms of fraud (including entrance exams) to get their children enrolled.
In this analysis, highly competitive schools accounted for 3.4% of all colleges and universities and only 4.1% of students. In contrast, more than half of the schools in our sample (53.3%) admitted two-thirds or more of their applicants in 2017, including St. John’s University in New York (67.7%), Virginia Tech (70.1%) , Quinnipiac University (73.9%), University of Missouri-Columbia (78.1%) and George Mason University (81.3%).
Indeed, acceptance rates have dropped dramatically in recent years. Of the roughly 45% of schools we examined, acceptance rates in 2017 were at least 10% lower than in 2002; another 8% saw smaller declines (between 5% and 10%). Of the 4,400 or so higher education degree-granting institutions (including branch campuses) in the United States, about 2,800 are four-year colleges and universities. In that group, about 2,300 are public or private entities that are not-for-profit, and that’s the subset we’re focusing on.
Application, admission, and enrollment data were obtained from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics’ Project Integrated Post-Elementary Education Data System (IPEDS). The analysis only looked at schools with data for 2002 and 2017. To avoid small numerical changes leading to large percentage changes, the analysis was limited to schools with at least 100 applications in both years. It also excluded 55 schools that were two-year schools in 2002 but switched to four-year programs in 2017. (IPEDS doesn’t collect application and admissions data for schools with an “open enrollment” policy, under which no one-school diploma or equivalent.)
