Troops usually award Scouts with badges of merit earned at honorary court events. Most Scouts will receive one or three merit badges at a time, possibly more after summer or winter camps.

“As a Recon Master, I’m impressed that his family has accepted it. Some of these merit badges take nine months. You should really want it.”

What makes Beaumier most proud is the work that Cy-Fair High School principal percussionist Kralowetz has done to earn the Bugler Merit Badge. Requirements include serving as a trumpeter for three months.

“It’s hard to play the trumpet, there’s no valve,” Beaumier said. “At every unit meeting he did everything I asked for with a smile, knowing he wouldn’t always blow sweet notes. I told him not to tell you (list of requirements). Have fun. Just play.”

In the eighth grade, Kralowetz and her family moved to Calgary, Canada, to pursue her father’s job in the oil industry. There he joined the American Boy Scouts.

“The weather there was very different,” Kralowetz said. He built a “snow cave” with members of his troupe to sleep during a camping trip in the Canadian Rockies. By then, Kralowetz was already working towards the goal of earning every available merit badge, some of which opened up scouts to potential careers.
