Every year around this time, hundreds of thousands of hopeful prospective college students find out which school (sometimes many) they applied to has accepted them. Extremely low acceptance rates at many “elite” colleges have received more attention this year than in previous years, as a college admissions scandal has led to dozens of wealthy parents being accused of using bribes to get their kids to the ideal schools.
Majority Of Us Colleges Admit Most Of Their Applicants
But despite all the attention given to these branded institutions, the full picture of college admissions is very different: According to one study, the vast majority of schools where most Americans go to higher education admit the most applicants. The latest analysis from the Pew Research Center of the U.S. Department of Education.
Of the 1,364 four-year colleges and universities we analyzed, 17 admitted fewer than 10% of applicants in 2017, the most recent year for which detailed data is available. This group includes prestigious universities such as Stanford (4.7%), Harvard (5.2%), Yale (6.9%) and Northwestern University (9.2%). Another 29 schools accepted between 10% and 20% of applicants, including Georgetown (15.7%), USC (16%), UCLA (16.1%) and UC Berkeley (17.1%). All of these schools, along with three other schools with higher acceptance rates, were embroiled in admissions scandals, either because coaches and other athletic staff were accused of taking bribes to designate ineligible students as “recruit athletes,” or Because parents of these schools and current students are accused of paying for other types of cheating (including entrance exams) to get their kids in.
In this analysis, highly competitive schools accounted for 3.4% of all colleges and universities and only 4.1% of total enrollment. In contrast, more than half of the schools in our sample (53.3%) admitted two-thirds or more of their applicants in 2017, including prestigious schools like St. Louis. St. John’s University in New York (67.7%), Virginia Tech (70.1%), Quinnipiac University (73.9%), University of Missouri-Columbia (78.1%) and George Mason University (81.3%).
Indeed, acceptance rates have dropped a lot in recent years. Of the roughly 45% of schools we examined, acceptance rates in 2017 were at least 10% lower than in 2002; another 8% saw more modest declines (between 5% and 10%). But 16% of schools had largely unchanged acceptance rates (i.e. 2017 acceptance rates were within 5% of 2002 in any case), and at nearly 31% of schools, 2017 acceptance rates were actually high at the age of 15. forward.

For all institutions analyzed, there were about 4.9 million applications in total in 2002, or about four for each student who ended up enrolling somewhere. In 2017, the total number of applications more than doubled to nearly 10.2 million, or 6.8 per registered student. Applications to competitive schools at all levels increased, although not following any of the usual patterns. Across all schools, except for the most competitive schools, which admitted less than 10 percent of applicants in 2017, admissions increased. But only at the schools with the highest acceptance rates (70% or more) did the growth in admissions grow enough to keep up with the growth in applications.
For example, among the most unique schools — those that admitted 10% to 20% of applicants in 2017 — saw a 110% increase in applications between 2002 and 2017, but only a 17% increase in acceptances; As a result, the group’s average acceptance rate dropped from 27.1% to 14.4%. The expansion of the general application, which facilitates students applying to various schools, does not appear to be behind the increase in applications. The so-called general application is accepted by about 800 universities in the United States and dozens of universities abroad. Of the 1,364 institutions in our sample, 729 accepted joint applications and (or in some cases did not) their own application forms; the other 635 used their own forms. While it might be doubtful that the ease of applying to multiple schools through a joint application would lead to stronger growth in applications between those schools, there was little difference in growth rates in 2002. – There is no difference between schools using the Universal App in 2017 and those using the Universal App.
Of the 4,400 degree-granting institutions of higher education in the United States, including branch campuses, approximately 2,800 are four-year colleges and universities. Of this group, about 2,300 are public or private nonprofits, which is the subset we focus on.
Data on applications, admissions, and enrollment comes from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics’ Project Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). The analysis only looked at schools for which data were available for both 2002 and 2017. To avoid problems with small numerical changes leading to large percentage changes, the analysis was limited to schools with at least 100 applications in both years. We also excluded 55 schools that were two-year programs in 2002 but became four-year programs in 2017. (IPEDS does not collect application and admissions data for “open admissions” schoolsa – a recognized school diploma or equivalent.) In the end, 1,364 institutions met all of these criteria.
