The famous French painter Henri Matisse once said, “Creativity takes courage”. Obviously, you already have the guts to create, so now go a step further and apply for some scholarships.

Always check with your college or university (or colleges you are interested in) for arts scholarship opportunities. Many colleges offer scholarships to students with special talents in the arts.

The answer to this question depends on several factors. Let’s say you are a high school senior applying for arts scholarships. If you are applying to art schools, these schools may not major outside of the arts. In this case, if you win an art scholarship, you have to use it at that school, and therefore you have to make art.

But let’s say you’re a high school senior making art, but you’re still not sure if you want to pursue it. You can still win art scholarships! You should qualify for most arts scholarships, whether they’re from your school or another organisation. High school freshmen often don’t know their major yet, so they don’t expect you to specialize in the arts to win the scholarship. For example, Kenyon College’s $15,000 annual Art Scholarship does not require students to graduate from it.

A notable possible exception to this rule is students who are awarded renewable scholarships. If the scholarship is dependent on your majoring and changing your major, you may not be able to renew. Usually you will not have to repay the first prize, but you will not continue to win.
