Our B.A. in education Early childhood education (preschool through 5th grade) requires a total of 128 credit hours: 21 in core curriculum, 45 hours in general content, 13 in prerequisites, 12 hours in basic vocational education, and 37 hours in basic early education.
Foundation courses offer students a comprehensive introduction to a range of subject areas and help build the skills necessary for academic and personal success. 8-10 of these points will be fulfilled by the major.

An introduction to the historical, sociological, and philosophical foundations of education, including an understanding of the moral, social, and political dimensions of classroom teaching and learning. The focus is on education as a profession. Designed to facilitate career exploration.
Field practicum component of ED 202. Twenty hours of observation, one-on-one instruction, or other classroom-related activities in three separate visits to classrooms representing the ECE, MCE, and AYA licensure areas. Must be taken concurrently with ED 202.
Study of the theory of development, learning and teaching and their practical application in effective teaching of diverse populations. Explores the psychological bases of student variability, behavioral and cognitive theories of learning, information processing, motivational theories, assessment practices, and the evaluation of student learning. Research findings and current best practices in the above areas are explored in relation to creating a positive learning environment in the classroom. Prerequisite: PY 201 or equivalent.
Lifespan overview of students with special learning needs. Emphasis will be placed on the characteristics of mental, sensory, physical, communication, social, and emotional development that influence learning and adaptive behavior. Discussion of issues related to education, family life, and federal and state legislation. The focus will be on the thirteen disabilities in the law and how accommodations are made for those students. Prerequisite: PY 201
What Can I Do With An Early Childhood Education Degree?
Approximately 10 hours of observation at an appropriate location, as determined by the instructor and/or field placement director. This course provides time to organize and reflect on field experiences in classrooms with students with learning differences. Must be taken concurrently with ED 205.
This course introduces the science of human behavior and mental processes. Emphasis is placed on the principles, methods and theories of modern psychology. Major topics covered include research design, life span development, personality, learning, memory, biopsychology, and psychopathology. Prerequisites: None. (Student learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4)
An intermediate level course on integrating technology into the classroom, including assistive technology for diverse students and students with special needs. Teacher candidates are exposed to basic technology operations for personal and professional use, deal with social, ethical and human issues of life in a digital society and implement teaching methodology that promotes technology as a tool in the learning process.
Examining the principles of the curriculum that influence the planning of teaching activities for students. Emphasis placed on the Back Design concept. Prerequisites: Completion of ALL other educational courses and 90 percent of content. The student must be prepared to teach in one or two semesters after completing this course. ED 341 precedes ED 342.
Online Early Childhood Education Degree
A study of the principles and application of classroom management techniques. This course will cover the reasons why students misbehave and how to effectively respond to common behavior problems. Practical experiences, case examples and exercises will promote increased skills in defining and assessing the environment, students, inappropriate behavior and the impact of the teacher’s individual style/philosophy on classroom management. Through field experiences in the area of licensure (pre-K-3, MCE, or AYA-Secondary), students in this course will learn how to evaluate intervention strategies and design a classroom management plan that makes sense for the students in their classrooms . Content will include strategies for collaboration between parents and professionals. The information provided will allow participants to immediately implement strategies across schools, mental health, and human services and to address the social, behavioral, and academic needs of students in the core area. This course has ten (10) hours of fieldwork built into the course.
An integrative seminar that focuses on understanding current issues affecting education and educational practices in the United States and the role of the professional educator in responding to these issues. Students are required to complete and submit an electronic portfolio before completing this course. A higher status is required. It must be taken immediately before the student’s class.
Understanding the nature and role of word recognition literacy. This course analyzes phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, structural analysis and morpheme units in decoding, spelling and their application to reading and writing. Knowledge of how to assess and intervene in word recognition through informal assessments is also explored. This course should be the first reading course. Prerequisites: ED 202, 203, 204, 205, 206.
This introductory course includes an overview of the history, philosophy, and goals of teaching preschool through ninth grade students. Emphasis is placed on the study of developmentally appropriate curriculum organization, the need for curriculum integration, and multiple strategies for assessing and evaluating student success. Prerequisite: ED 202.
What Can You Do With An Early Childhood Education Certificate? Exploring Your Options
The course explains how to create a literate classroom environment for students using children’s literature to teach, renew, expand, and enjoy books. A wide variety of reading levels and different types of literature for young children, elementary, middle, middle, and high school will be explored and evaluated. Books will be judged on their genre characteristics and classroom use in language arts and cross-curricular settings. This course does not meet the literature requirements for the Core Curriculum. Reading strategies for successfully incorporating literature into the classroom will be taught.
A Study of Assessment and Intervention Procedures for Classroom Diagnosis and Reading Remediation. Emphasis is placed on methods and materials for correcting reading problems. Last course to read basic ECE, MCE, MMIS. Prerequisites: ED 221, ED 332, and ED 376 To be taken with ED 380.
A comprehensive approach to reading development with a focus on developing language, oral communication and reading/writing skills through developmental, individual and age-appropriate activities for young children. Emphasis on children’s progress in literacy development, appropriate teaching methodologies, and a holistic approach to literature and materials for young learners. Prerequisites: ED 202, 203, 204, 205, 206, 221.
This course focuses on the appreciation and integration of art, music, and physical movement in a classroom learning environment. Students will learn strategies and techniques for meeting the needs of students with diverse needs and cultural backgrounds in the context of developmentally appropriate practice. This course has five hours of fieldwork built into the course. Prerequisites: ED 204, ED 265.
Bachelor Of Arts In Inclusive Early Childhood Education
A component for setting fields for the reader core required for all licenses. Thirty hours of observation/activity at an appropriate location, as determined by the instructor and/or fieldwork leader. Studying and conducting multiple assessments of an informal reading list for elementary, middle, and high school students. To be taken with ED 355. Prerequisites: This is the last of the core reading courses.
Fifteen weeks of charter school student teaching in an early childhood classroom (Pre-K–3) under the supervision of cooperating teachers and faculty supervisors. Prerequisite: Approval of department. All educational subjects and subject content areas must be completed prior to the student’s lecture. The formal request submitted one semester before the start of classes.
This course is designed to prepare early education subjects to successfully teach fourth and fifth grade math and science. Pedagogy directly related to the nature and needs of fourth and fifth grade math and science will be discussed and practiced throughout the course.
