And others? I sat in class this morning while my international students gave several PowerPoint presentations even though they were struggling with English grammar.
Not a comic book. No, Robert Moses did not lead anyone out of Egypt. But even mistakes help us learn about context. (And besides, I also teach American at St. Francis College, where I hear the same mistakes.)
New York University For International Students
My students felt a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the three-hour class – along with a stronger connection to New York City and NYU. “Now we’re New Yorkers!”
Amerigo International Students Just Got Into New York University (#30)
While I would like to take credit for the amazing series of lessons that resulted from these presentations, they were actually the brainchild of NYU University Archivist Janet Bunde. I first contacted him in hopes of using old NYU photos on the American Language Institute (ALI) Instagram account. A joy to talk to and my love of New York City history, Janet immediately convinced me to take a class of ALI students to the archives and have them do a little project. If it works (and it does!), then we will discuss other classes and more detailed projects in the next semesters.
Excitement reigns as students walk through the exhibits in the reading room, which focuses on the library of Juan Carlos Aponte, a 19th-century Cuban carpenter, artist, and soldier. My Spanish speakers are happy to find the main source of Spanish displayed; My Chinese speakers were shocked to discover that Cuba once had Chinese slaves.
Afterwards, my students sat at three small tables in a conference room where, with props and projections, Janet explained what archives are and what archives do. He then showed each desk a different folder of old photos and drawings of a targeted NYU building across from Washington Square Park:
With the help of Janet and I—although they didn’t need much—the students compared and discussed the photos, looking at them as historians to gather as much information as they could. After a long and lively discussion as a class when the group work was done, we visited and photographed the buildings in their current incarnation.
Cost Of Us Education Weighs Heavily On International Students
In addition to their regular assignments, each group has a few weeks to do a little research in English about their building (Moan! Groan! No native language work allowed!) to prepare for the presentation and some simple writing.
We begin the semester with photo descriptions that encourage students’ worldview and cultural perspective, an eye for detail, clockwise (“The Woman Sitting in the Desert”), imagining stories. about the person in the photo, etc. .
We also created an interactive map of the history of New York from the Native Americans to the arrival of the Dutch in the 21st century in New York as a city reborn. Students watch and discuss
And so on. They are surprised that much of this rich history is not part of history courses and unknown even to many Americans. We are more focused on the unique and rare.
International Students Fall In Love With New York City And Nyu History
We then took an interactive tour of Greenwich Village starting at Cooper Square and McSorley’s and ending at the Fiorello LaGuardia statue. Washington Mews in particular was breathless, with every student simultaneously pulling out a phone to capture this place they say is impossible in Manhattan.
When we met Janet Bunde at the Astor Place Starbucks and went to the Bobst Library with her, my students were open to what she would teach, ready to be absorbed in a new love of history and culture. Do not forget, months before a number of them confessed that they do not read for fun or find interesting stories. It was a win-win situation all around.
