The first medical student program is a 10-week program that provides hands-on experience in biological, translational, or clinical research. Students who have completed their first year of medical education are eligible to apply.

Students are paired with an MD Anderson research or clinical faculty mentor. Participants work with a mentor in a lab or clinic on projects developed by faculty to demonstrate current research. Workshops and lectures provide opportunities to network with faculty, residents, postdoctoral clinical fellows, and other stakeholders. Through the program, students consider goals related to careers in cancer research and patient care. The program culminates in a symposium where participants present talks and posters on their research projects to peers and faculty.

First-year medical students receive a stipend of $6,000 for the 10-week program. Fees may vary depending on actual days of the week worked. Students are required to pay living, accommodation and travel expenses from these funds. Payments are made on the 5th and 20th of each month, less any required federal tax.

Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program

Before 2021, the program offers participants the opportunity to shadow physicians, thereby providing greater exposure and insights into many aspects of clinical medicine.

On Saturday, October 6, 2018, the Office of Student Diversity hosted the 50th Anniversary of the Traveling Summer Research Fellowship Program for Pre-Medical Students (T-SRF). We welcome all the former directors of the program: Dr. James Curtis; Dr. Bruce Ballard; Dr. Carly Miller and Dr. Joseph Murray. About 200 guests have registered for the event, most of whom are T-SRF participants. Many medical students and members of the Weill Cornell community also participated in the day’s events. As guests enter the Belfer Skylight Lounge for lunch, they are greeted by the sound of music from the Medicinal Jazz Suite.

The next part of the program was held at Uris Hall. There, Dean Augustine M.K. Choi, MD. Welcome address. By Dr. Elizabeth Wilson-Anstey had her annual speech at Diversity Week. Dr. James L. Curtis, the first director of the T-SRF program, was the keynote speaker. His topic was “Celebrating 50 Years of Groundbreaking in Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine.” The program includes important topics such as the impact of the T-SRF program, 1969 – 2015. Diversity at Weill Cornell Medicine; health and health care disparities; and social mobility, access, and awareness among medical students. Each former T-SRF director has been given a watch to demonstrate how the T-SRF program has stood the test of time. WCM closed with a beautiful rendition of “Heal Our Earth” sung by her very own Sharon Brooks.

The evening concluded with a cocktail reception at the Griffiths Faculty Club. There, people were able to talk about the presentations, take photos and plan to participate in the T-SRF program in the future. Overall, the event was a great success. We look forward to providing opportunities for those who have benefited from the program and to share those benefits with future generations of medically underrepresented students. Limited funding is available through the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, and cannot be combined with funding from outside agencies. Students considered for funding will apply and be rejected through other sources available through the Summer Student Research Program. Information about these external grants can be obtained through the Medical Student Summer Research Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The amount of funding available varies from year to year, and applications are highly competitive. It is important that both the student and the sponsor discuss this issue during the application process and understand that their individual project may not receive funding. Applicants not supported by the Medical Student Summer Research Program will be considered for departmental funding. Awards are based on the project’s alignment with the goals of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, the quality of the research proposal, suitability for a short-term research experience, and the student’s defined role in the research project. Students should be aware that research projects cannot be completely completed during the summer and that they must be ready and committed to see the projects through.

Additionally, students must complete all fellowship weeks and write a summary of their research to prepare for the research poster session. It is recommended that sponsors allow their peers to present a short oral discussion of their project at a chapter meeting.

Presentation of posters and papers at national meetings and publication of the research project in scientific journals of orthopedic surgery is the expected goal of all research projects. Financial support may be available for students presenting papers at the annual national meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons or a similar major specialty society meeting.

The research project must be hypothesis-driven and in any basic or clinical orthopedic science. Research areas that meet the scientific needs of the funding agencies of that year should be studied in particular. The student’s role must be well defined and demonstrate a significant level of involvement and commitment. The project should focus on a specific scientific question or descriptive element of a larger project and be appropriate in the context for the student to complete the assignment. The research plan submitted with the application should have a clear, well-defined hypothesis, which can be tested with defined objectives and methods. Independent, student-led research projects are not eligible for this program. Instead, students must work on existing research conducted by a full-time faculty member in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
