The kids in my classes always knew they could never disturb another kid who was alone in the room. I hesitate to recommend this place long term because I think it’s more important for kids to learn to use it as a place to calm down and learn to calm down. Actual time-outs should be brief and not forceful on the child. I don’t know about you, but there are many times when I just need to be left alone and I don’t need to punish. In fact, I find being alone with a book or soft music very empowering! Lonely places can have library books, soft pillows, even headphones and music. Label everything!!! Having a print-rich environment means that everything in your classroom should have a label with a picture and printed upper and lower case letters on the shelf. Literacy development begins with the earliest learners – infants – so start labeling early and using the words in the labels.
A good classroom organization can make classroom management much easier because children can more easily avoid conflict. When classrooms are centrally located, it seems to be easier for children to start playing and stay.
