Are you thinking about homeschooling this year? Does the thought of homeschooling really overwhelm you? You are not alone! One of the most frequently asked questions is about creating a homeschool schedule. I finished preschool at home with my three boys, so I hope my tips for organizing a preschool schedule at home will give you some ideas!

Have you ever heard the expression, “kids thrive on routine?” Yes that’s correct! Children don’t have much control over their lives, but routine can give them a sense of order, stability, and comfort. Just like having a bedtime or mealtime routine, having a preschool teaching routine will help you in the long run.

If you’re homeschooling, it’s important to start the day the same way so they know that school time has started and that it’s different from other days.

At the beginning of the school year, you should teach your child this routine. Don’t be discouraged if it takes time. Preschoolers are young and it may take a few days or a few weeks to really start to understand the routine. I always recommend starting small. For example, at the beginning of the year if your child is not used to school time, just 10 minutes is enough. Work your way up to a longer period of time. But start small so you can be successful with it and also not to burden your child!

• Get up early and start your day early – take care of yourself before babysitting

I know that not every day is going to be perfect, and that’s okay. But know that you are not alone in this and we all have times where we are not in a good routine.

The big takeaway is this… your job is to create a routine for your child so that they feel comfortable with school. It may take some time to prepare and learn for your child, but in the long run, it will really help. In the next lesson, I will share with you some sample schedules to understand how you want to organize YOUR day!

Did you know when you do preschool at home, it doesn’t take long? See the chart below to see how long hands-on instruction is required for each class.

I have three sample schedules to share with you for preschool at home. The first two schedules fit into my preschool curriculum, Home Preschool Made Easy.

In the curriculum, there are activities for reading aloud and letters for each day. Then I have lots of hands-on activities for the day, covering the areas of literacy, math, science, sensory play, process arts, fine motor skills, and more.

Of course, no schedule is perfect. As I said earlier, you can create your schedule and start small. You may find that the schedule is not working for you and you need to change it. We did it many times when we started homeschooling! Here’s an example of another schedule we’ve created.

“I love it! This bundle has lots of options for kids. I work in a special education class and it’s perfect for my students who are still learning their alphabet. Thank you!” -Mikaela (Fine Motor Alphabet Bundle) The key to a successful preschool year at home is planning. I’m the type of person who likes to write my lesson plans on paper. It helps me organize my ideas and focus me on what needs to be taught. Today I’m excited to share with you my new preschool weekly planner that I’ll be using with my 4 year old preschooler this school year!

I like to plan my week on Sunday and gather all the materials I need for my lessons that week. Here is what the sheet looks like. Here are a few things we did on this topic:

I’ve had a lot of preschool moms at home asking me how to do this, especially if you have kids that you’re homeschooling. I think loop time is a great way to start the preschool day. This becomes routine and helps the child understand that this is how the school day begins. If you have older children who are homeschooled, this is a great way to do things together. I still suggest doing loop time even if you only have 1 child.

I’d like to add this idea to a morning message like this one on the Pre-K Page. If you want to read more about loop time, I recommend reading this article on 10 Tips for Circle Time.

Language arts include listening, reading, writing, and speaking. For preschoolers, that means doing activities with the alphabet, listening skills, phonics, rhyming words, and handwriting.

I love doing experiments and hands-on activities for preschool science. We usually do 1 math or science activity in our preschool day.

Motor skills for fine motor (small movements) and gross motor (large movements) Both are important to practice! Building fine motor skills helps with pencil grip and handwriting skills. We don’t do both every day, but we try.

Exploring the senses is very important for preschoolers. Sensory bins are a great way to do this. You can also make sensory bottles or other activities that engage the senses.

Our 2nd Grade Homeschool Schedule And Curriculum (with Pre K Too!)

I do arts and crafts activities about 3 times a week. The artistic process is an open art activity. There is no end product, whatever art your preschooler makes!

These are the subjects that I plan to take. I also make sure we have plenty of time to play outside, do study games, field trips, and read lots of books! I just know that when I plan our week around this topic, I feel more accomplished. (You’ll notice in the image above that we don’t officially go to school on Wednesdays. It’s up to you how many days you feel you need to go to school. I recommend between 2-4 per week for preschoolers.)

I’d also like to share some sample schedules for ages 2, 3, and 4-5. 2 year olds are too young to start formal preschool, so I only do 1 main activity with them (either alphabet or math). Here’s what the schedule looks like:
