In a statement to the Executive Committee on Monday, the Scouts said the group will do more to make “everyone feel they belong, are respected and valued in Scouting.”

The organization said it will make diversity and inclusion training mandatory for its employees from July 1 and will work with local councils to ensure that property names, events and other badges do not bear “symbols of persecution”. The Scouts said the review would “build” on a 30-year ban on displaying the Confederate flag.

Effie DeMarcos, a spokeswoman for Scouts, said the organization is still working out the details of how Scouts will earn the Diversity and Inclusion badge. It usually takes years to design a new badge, but she said the timeline will be cut short in this case.

In a statement, the organization said it would incorporate elements of existing badges that “require Scouts to learn about and interact with other groups and cultures to increase understanding and encourage affirmative action.”

“We believe black lives matter,” the organization said in a statement, saying the group supports black families and individuals. “This is not a political issue; it is a human rights issue and we all have a responsibility to address it.”

The Boy Scouts originally released a broader statement on June 3, without mentioning race, and instead focused on teaching Scouts to “become better versions of themselves.”

“I was shocked and deeply disappointed that their original statement did not mention the black experience, and the pain felt by the black community,” said Dwayne Fontaine Jr., 29, an Eagle Scout who also volunteered as a Scout leader. .

Last week, Fontaine helped write a letter signed by more than 500 Scouts calling on Boy Scouts to take a tougher stance against “anti-black racism.” In an interview, he said he was “impressed” by the organization’s statement this week.

Mr Fontaine, who is black, said Scouts still had “an extraordinary amount of work to do to create an environment where blacks had equal access and equal outcomes in Scouting, and an experience where we needed to feel a sense of belonging”.

As the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis sparked nationwide protests against racial equality, many organizations and companies have sought to publicly support the cause. Apple pledged $100 million to the Racial Justice Initiative. Sephora has said it will dedicate at least 15 percent of its shelf space to black-owned products, and companies like Nike, Twitter and Citigroup have joined the Black Lives Matter movement.

The Boy Scouts statement comes as membership has dwindled in recent years.
