Editor’s Note: This is the first in a three-part series dedicated to NSF-GRFP’s new university research and mentoring program, GRFP @ ASU. This first article will focus on mentoring, the second on follow-up, and the third will show the candidate through the mentoring system, up to reward and finally becoming a mentor in the program.

The Office of Postgraduate Studies at Arizona State University has developed, piloted and implemented an extensive peer-to-peer mentoring program through a strong partnership with the government’s STEM-Awarded Program National Science Foundation (NSF-GRFP). Download the complete picture

GRFP department chairman Suren Jayasuriya said: “I had a great experience mentoring NSF-GRFP candidates when they submitted their proposals. I think this mentoring program is a great source of information and something I wish I had when I was applying for the school’s “scoring” award. @ASU Doradca and associate professor at the School of Arts, Media and Engineering and the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy.

National Science Foundation (nsf) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (grfp)

The National Science Foundation is the United States government agency that supports basic research and education in all areas of non-medical science. It is the federal sponsor of basic science and technology research at US universities and colleges.

ASU’s relationship with NSF is strong. Recently, the NSF ranked ASU 7th (out of 760) for research spending among universities without medical school. In September 2018, ASU received a grant of $ 2.9 million from the NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award to support the development of leadership pathways for STEM researchers, particularly women and under-represented minorities.

In December 2019, the NSF awarded an ASU-led project of $ 3.5 million to create an infrastructure development platform for urban resilience. ASU’s director of research and innovation, Sethuraman “Panch” Panchanathan, was also nominated by the US President to lead the NSF.

ASU continues to strengthen its relationship with NSF through a new graduate scholarship program that provides a mentoring and follow-up system. Both were developed by Joshua Brooks, who heads the ASU Office of Distinguished Graduate Scholarships – a joint venture between Graduate College and Barrett’s National Academic Advisory Bureau.

Ph.d. Students Receive Nsf Graduate Research Fellowships For 2022

GRFP is the oldest scholarship program supporting STEM graduates. Over three years, it awards $ 138,000,000 to match the tuition fees for students and the cost of education offered by the ASU Graduate College. In addition, ASU’s Graduate College provides additional scholarships and fellowships, health insurance, and an annual scholarship of $ 750 to further support student research. Our alumni include Karen Uhlenbeck, first Nobel laureate in mathematics, former US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Google founder Sergey Brin, and Sandra Faber, National Science Medalist.

Historically, a disproportionate number of GRFP audiences have been concentrated in a few elite institutions. According to a 2019 audience analysis, the top 10 schools with the highest number of alumni awards collected 31% of the available awards. 14% of the laureates were concentrated in only three of these ten schools. Eighty-six percent of the awards are focused on R1 (research intensive) companies.

“I thought Arizona State University was an R1 institution that already has a strong relationship with NSF, so GRFP is well positioned to be part of their academic efforts to increase the number of ASU students receiving GRFP. ”Brooks said.

• Resources: ASU’s Office of Honors Graduate Fellowship is a one-man office. However, it is responsible for awarding all major R1 US research fellowships, including NSF-GRFP. Any solution would have to work within budget and staff constraints.

One Person Office Becomes Largest Nsf Grfp Advising Program In Academia

• Tracking: If a university cannot determine who or how many applicants, it cannot judge the sustainability of any potential development activities. However, tracking GRFP is so difficult that, with the exception of universities that require all STEM alumni (e.g. Stanford), no institution has been able to track one of their students who actually applied in a given year – that is, up to that academic year. . The Graduate Scholarship Office has developed and tested a system to track GRFP ASU applicants – awarded and not awarded – for their final applications and will have this information available by the end of the 2020 semester.

GRFP @ ASU now has 20 officially one-on-one mentors for GRFP alone who have won GRFP in the past. Mentors are both ASU faculty who are GRFP alumni and NSF Graduate Research Fellows participating in ASU.

These counselors attend in-depth, one-on-one counseling sessions with student candidates in the weeks leading up to the GRFP deadline. The advisory system can currently handle up to 60 NSF-GRFP candidates, the greatest depth of GRFP advising in academia.

“NSF-GRFP is already very competitive and limited to one application possibility, so ASU students are competing with each other. They need not only good research ideas, but also coaching and support in coming up with good ideas, ”said KiKi Jenkins. teacher at the School of Future Innovation. “The new ASF NSF-GRFP mentoring system is a promising and effective program. Leveraging the experience and knowledge of successful GRFP audiences as mentors, they provide multi-faculty ASU students with personalized mentoring that can help you diversify your audience. I’ve never seen such a fun, personalized program at other universities, and if it works, it could be a model program. “

Ph.d. Student Earns Prestigious Nsf Graduate Research Fellowship

Prior to the establishment of the second year of the Graduate College Scholarship Program, GRFP preparation was ad hoc and uncooperative. Individual GRFP consultations are specifically tailored to specific areas. Each entity may maintain a small number of GRFP candidates if they intend to provide detailed advice. However, when faculty, fellows, and applicants across all STEM disciplines come together and organize together, they can support a large community of GRFP applicants applying for ASU through deep, high-quality mentoring.

This ability to organize and mobilize faculty and students around the world in sustainable innovation programs is a success for Brooks. It presents this model with other great social agendas.

One of the faculty advisers on this new initiative is Suren Jayasuriya, an NSF-GRFP employee and associate professor at the School of Arts, Media and Engineering and the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering.

“For many students, this is their first experience where they do not get homework, are not told what to do in the research field, but give them the confidence and confidence that they will be required by the NSF.” What important research would you like to do? How will this affect people and society? How to improve access to public research, accept new ideas and implement them? ‘”Jayasuriya.

Nsf’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (grfp): Application Tips And Tricks

Jayasuriya continued, “I think this is the first time these students have been asked these questions from something as obscure as the National Science Foundation.” “I myself was an NSF-GRFP award winner… NSF-GRFP gave me the courage to try something new and answer (these questions) in my own way. The three students I met were bright, enthusiastic, and most all had new ideas and different ideas to add to the national conversation. Mostly my job was to show them how to find answers to NSF-GRFP questions all the time, and it was just my job to help them organize the communication of their message, their story. I think this mentoring program is an important addition to ASU as it doubles what NSF normally receives: You invest in students not necessarily for their achievements, but because of the ideas of young people who are the greatest hope for the development of science and technology in our country. “

In addition to GRFP faculty advisers such as Jayasuriya, Brooks’s office also has Graduate Research Fellows currently at ASU who advise on the project. One of these mentors is the NSF Graduate Research Fellow J.P. Nelson. Nelson won the award in 2019 after going through Brooks’s early-stage mentoring system – which became GRFP @ ASU.

“For the most part, I really try to do for my advice what my friends, mentors and advisers have done for me,” said Nelson. “Josh (Brooks) put a lot of emphasis on writing the lyrics when he first told me about the new program, and I was basically working with my three mentors at this stage on the writing program – in terms of content, structure and style. try to respect their feelings, the linguistic structure of the program, with individuality and research, and help them think about how they want to express their experiences, goals and desires with these words.

“Pretty much, I just read the text and made comments,” he continued. “But most of all, I try to present myself as a market for candidates – for what I am worth.
