The City of La Mesa has several openings for lifeguard instructors. This is a temporary, part-time position working approximately 20-25 hours per week, Monday through Sunday. Opening hours vary according to the assigned work shift.

The purpose of class definitions is to provide a descriptive list of tasks that employees perform in a class. The specifications are not intended to reflect all tasks performed within the assignment.

Lifeguard Instructor Job Description

Assists in organizing recreational activities in connection with water utility programs; observe and supervise the activities of visitors in and around the swimming pool; create lesson plans and teach students swimming and water safety activities; protect lives, prevent accidents and enforce pool rules; rescue swimmers in emergencies; and assists in the maintenance of premises and equipment.

Formal or informal education or training that provides the ability to read and write at a level required for successful employment.

Applicants must be at least 16 years old at the time of hire. If the applicant is still in high school, they must submit a California Worker’s Permit.

Swim Instructor Job Description

A lifeguard training certificate or similar is considered an advantage. City of La Mesa employees may issue lifeguard training certification upon employment, but continued employment requires completion of lifeguard training certification requirements.

Applicants must submit an online and supplemental questionnaire. The position is open until the city’s needs, so applicants are encouraged to apply immediately. Only those applicants whose qualifications best meet the city’s needs will be invited to the skills test and oral interview. Skills screening includes swimming skills, treading water and retrieving a 10lb brick from the bottom of a 10ft pool. Submitting an application does not guarantee participation in the testing and interview process. Applicants will be notified when the dates have been confirmed.
